Community gets electricity safety education

The Tsakane community was educated about electricity safety last week.

Representatives from Eskom, disaster management and the EMPD were at the Sindane Community Park with community members who came out in large numbers to get information about electricity safety.

The community was also educated about how to fight fires in their homes while waiting for firefighters to arrive on the scene.

Speaking on behalf of Eskom, Laurence Ndlela explained that the highest number of people electrocuted, are children.

“It is true that many children have lost their lives because of illegal electricity connections,” said Ndlela.

He educated the community about the dangers that exposed electricity cables pose.

Ndlela warned residents to avoid building their homes on land where there are electricity cables going under the ground.

He said residents must also avoid cutting down a tree that has grown high and is touching the electricity cables.

“Do not remove the tree yourself, but inform Eskom,” he said.

Ndlela also explained the danger of leaving the electricity danger box open.

“Eskom always ensure that the danger boxes are locked, however, some the community members open these boxes and leave them open, posing danger to the lives of the children,” Ndlela added.

Busisiwe Ntshangase, a Tsakane resident, thanked Eskom for showing care and educating them about the dangers of electricity.

She said she will also pass the information that she got to others.

“I will educate my children and neighbours about the dangers of using electricity irresponsibly,” said Nthangase.
