UPDATE: Robbery gone wrong

Two men, aged 32 and 33, were arrested on Thursday morning in Springs' central business district in what seems to a be an attempted robbery.

When the Addie arrived on the scene in Third Street the suspects were lying on the ground under heavy police guard.

Both were lying next to the alleged getaway car, a white Golf GTI without registration numbers.

There was a high police presence, as well as a lot of spectators.

A police helicopter landed on the roof of The Avenues Shopping Centre shortly after the men were apprehended.

Captain Johannes Ramphora, Springs police spokesman says Springs SAPS’ crime intelligence unit received information of a possible armed robbery outside Absa in Fifth Avenue.

The robbers allegedly wanted to target two security guards, employed by Jimmy’s Scrap Metals who went to Absa to withdraw cash for the company.

Ramphora says 16 suspects armed with AK-47s and 9mm handguns waited outside the bank for the security guards’ exit.

They started shooting at the police’s tactical response team, flying squad and crime intelligence units who attempted to arrest them outside the bank.

One of the suspects, who was wounded in the cross fire, was rushed away by his friends in a silver VW Jetta.

This Jetta was allegedly hijacked earlier from a  SARS employee.

The vehicle was later recovered in Strubenvale.

Two suspects were arrested on the scene and the Golf was recovered.

Ramphora says the police opened a docket of attempted armed robbery, attempted murder, hijacking and malicious damage to property for further investigation.
