Police apprehend man in CBD

At this stage it is unclear what the cause of a commotion in the CBD this morning was.

It is believed that there may have been a robbery in the Springs central business district at about 9:45am, however this has not been confirmed.

Addie journalists are currently on the scene trying to confirm information with the Springs police and will report on this as the information becomes available.

The commotion was cause by a group of men, two of whom arrested on the corner of  Fifth Avenue and Third Street, possibly in connection with a bank robbery.

It is unclear how many men were part of the robbery and where precisely it took place.

Police were on the scene within minutes of the unrest being reported and a police helicopter was landed close to the scene.

Bystanders said the two men men allegedly wore bullet proof vests.

Billy Marx, who witnessed part of the action, told the Addie he heard four or five shots being fired as he was leaving Absa in Fifth Avenue.

One armed man then ran past Absa’s  main entrance towards the parking bays at the back of the bank.

He also saw a man trying to get inside a minibus taxi, but he was pushed out before the taxi sped off.
