No to coal mine

Clr calls for a stop to proposed mine

“Stop the open cast coal mine outside Springs,” was the call of Hennie van der Walt, Freedom Front councillor, at today’s council meeting in Ekurhuleni.

At Ekurhuleni’s June council meeting in Germiston he asked the metro mayor to urgently look into this proposed mine.

He said with the metro’s aerotropolis plans, Springs had to become Ekurhuleni’s freight airport.

With a new runway this will be possible, he said.

Van der Walt also expressed concern about the water quality of the Blesbokspruit, saying it was highly polluted.

As a pilot, regularly flying over the spruit area, he said the yellow acid water was clearly seen from the air.

“The farmers downstream cannot plant mealies or other crops, because the soil is useless.”

He also said he never sees any fishermen at Blesbokspruit as the water is highly polluted.
