Update: Abuse father’s court hearing starts

Abuse father's case postponed.

The hearing of the 36-year-old man accused of abusing his five children, including his 11-year-old son, briefly appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court today (June 12).

Having moved the case from the Regional Court to the Magistrate’s Court, magistrate Roy le Roux postponed the matter until July 25.

Pieter van Niekerk, who appeared for the first time representing the accused, agreed to the postponement requested by prosecutor Gcobani Lungu to allow for further investigation.

The man was denied bail last Thursday and will remain at Modderbee Prison until his July appearance.

He is accused of child abuse, defeating the ends of justice, attempted murder and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

The charges have yet to be read to him and he has not been asked to plead yet.
