Nyaope smokers targeted

Eliminating Nyaope in their community

Realising that their message may not be reaching those it is intended for, Tsakane Youth Development Programme decided to change their approach.

The organisation, together with Mashona VW Crew, police and local businesses went around Tsakane on Saturday to spots known to be frequented by drug users.

They distributed pamphlets, inviting young people to come to their offices to learn more about the various skills and acquiring opportunities, available to them.

Pule Moloi, chairperson of the organisation said they organised the outreach event to offer help to drug addicts.

He said counselling and referrals were some of the services offered to drug users who seek help from them.

The organisation has a support group for drug users, which meets on Tuesdays at 10am at the Tsakane Old Age Home.

Pule said, ‘young people with too much time on their hands and stakeholders turning a blind eye,’ was contributing to the drug problem facing the community.

Bongani Tholo (25) and Moeketsi Sibiya (24) who admitted to be dependent on nyaope, said they are tired of ‘doing wrong things’.

Both agreed that hanging out with smokers is a bad idea, cautioning that smokers will influence non smokers because they need people to assist with buying more drugs.

Bongani said nyaope had consumed his life so much, he failed his matric.

They cautioned young people who help with finding ways of getting money to buy drugs.
