Hijacker dies during gunshot exchange

The hijacker dies during the gunshot exchange with the police

One of three suspects was shot and died during a gunshot exchange between the police and the alleged hijackers.

Tsakane police spokesman Captain Petros Mabuza says the Springs police were chasing after three suspects who were driving a white BMW One Series that was reported hijacked in Midrand at the beginning of February this year.

The incident happened last Thursday around 8.30pm.

It is alleged that the exchange of gunshots between the police and the suspects resulted in the driver of the BMW losing focus and control of the car which eventually collided with the traffic light at the corner of Ndabezitha and Malandela streets.

One of the suspects died due to gunshot wounds while the other two suspects were arrested and are facing a charge of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle.

“The arrested suspects were released by the court following the failure to place the docket of possession of a hijacked motor vehicle on the court role for further investigation,” says Mabuza.

An inquest docket was opened and will be investigated by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate.
