The incident took place around 6.30pm at second Avenue in Bakerton. Captain Johannes Ramphora of the Springs police says the victim was with his friends inside the shop serving the customers when three unknown men barged inside.
He says the customers ran for their lives leaving the victim and his friends with the robbers.
Ramphora continues to say the suspects pushed the shop owner against the wall, assaulted him on the head and fled the scene with cash.
The victim was taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for treatment after sustaining injuries on the head and the upper body.
A case of business robbery was opened by the Springs police.
