Complex provides feast for grazing animals

man and mammal forced to share grass

KwaThema Sports Complex is one of the most used grounds in the community, designed to host sports games including soccer, golf, cricket, basketball and swimming.

However, people are not the only ones benefiting, cows and goats roam the complex, eating the grass which has become part of their daily diet.

One of the golfers who frequents the complex, Peter Nyathela (63) said many old people spend time at the complex, and would like to see the condition improved.

He said they are forced to play on the soccer field when soccer is not being played, due to the state of the golf range.

“The long grass on our driving range on the golf course results in our golf balls getting lost and they are costly,” added the golfer.

Having only one of the gates open makes accessing the sports complex a challenge for pedestrians who live around the complex, and those who come to play or watch games.

Asked if the livestock serves any purpose for feeding on the complex grass, Lebogang Ramashala, media officer of the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality said the animals were ‘encroaching onto the facility’.

She added that the Department of Sports and Recreation, ‘will use the new financial year, to close and reinforce gaps in the fence’.
