Noxolo Nogwaza remembered

Seeking closure after three years

The family of Noxolo Nogwaza said three years after their daughter’s murder they are still in pain.

A memorial stone was unveiled at the scene of the murder in Extension seven Langaville on Saturday.

The event which is a commemoration of the April 24, 2011 murder, was organised by the Ekurhuleni Pride Organising Committee (EPOC) and the ward 79 councillor Ivy Nkosi.

Noxolo’s killing made local and international headlines, with Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex (LGBTI) organisation alleging that the nurture of Noxolo’s murder was motivated by the fact that she was lesbian.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Noxolo’s aunt, Jabulile Nkabinde said although the lack of information on the case is causing pain and frustration, they will continue talking about what happened the day Noxolo was killed.

“She was at home the whole day, then a friend came to fetch her in the house, we understand they went to a tavern not far from here and that’s where she was last seen,” elaborates Jabulile.

She added that it wasn’t easy for the family to identify her body the following day.

“Her eyes and teeth were out and a big brick was on her face, we ask ourselves how it can be possible that those with any information don’t even write a letter and push it under our door, to help us find closure.”

Nontyatyambo Makapela from the Tshwaranang Legal Advocacy Centre said the South African constitution supersedes all beliefs, and promotes people’s right to non-violence.

“We have good policies that cover everyone regardless of sexual orientation, but implementation becomes a challenge,” added Nontyatyambo.
