Motorists turned victims of a protest

Five different cars were damaged, allegedly by the protesters, on Monday morning

According to Springs police spokesman, Captain Johannes Ramphora the incidents took place in Payneville and along Welgedacht Road between 6.45am and 8.30am.

He says the first incident took place at Mabhokobhoko Street in Payneville.

Ramphora explains that the victim says he was travelling along the street by bus when a group of people approached the bus and forced the passengers to jump out before throwing stones inside the bus, assaulting the passengers while also smashing the bus’s windows.

The second incident took place at Enstrada Road when the driver of a VW Polo saw the mob and made a U-turn.

“Her rear view mirror and the back windscreen were damaged,” said Ramphora.

He continued to say that the third victim of the angry mob was the driver of a car that was passing by Welgedacht Road.

The mob threw stones at the car, damaging all its windows.

Around 7.30am the driver of a Toyota Corolla almost lost his car when a group of people approached him, throwing stones at his car.

“The driver said he saw no other way to get away from the angry mob expect making a U-turn and driving for his life,” said Ramphora.

The last victim was driving a blue Opel Corsa along Enstrada Road.

The victim noticed that things were sour when a group of people blocked his way while others were already throwing stones at his car, smashing all his car’s windows.

Ramphora says the victim says the crowd pulled him out of the car and robbed him of his cellphone.

He continued to say that another motorist came to the victim’s rescue when he offered him a lift to escape from the crowd.

“When he came back to tow his car, the car was damaged as none of the windows had been left intact, the tyres were burnt and the body was full of serious dents.”

No arrests have been made regarding these incidents and the police opened cases of malicious damage to property and robbery.
