The man took his life while under the water at the Blesbokspruit on Saturday night.
Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says the deceased was seen shooting into the air in public and residents chased him with the intention of disarming him.
He says the suspect ran into the Blesbokspruit and residents did not give up but instead threw stones at him trying to chase him out of the water.
“The man turned the gun on himself, shooting himself while under the water and died on the scene,” says Ramphora.
He says his body was taken out by the police and his gun was also found in the dam on Sunday.
An inquest docket has been opened.
