Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says according to the information provided by the security guard, three suspects were stealing metal (steel) near the Grootvlei mine on Wednesday.
He says the guard said his attempt to stop the suspects from stealing, resulted in him being hit by them with one of the metal objects that they were stealing.
Ramphora adds that the guard then opened fire on the suspects, seriously injuring one of them.
The injured suspect was later taken to the Far East Rand Hospital for treatment and the guard was arrested and charged with attempted murder.
