NYDA encourages young voters

Appealing to young voters

The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) established a three-month programme known as “Promoting Youth Participation in the 2014 General Elections” which is aimed at encouraging young people to vote in the upcoming national elections.

KwaThema is home to one of the 10 local NYDA offices recently launched in the Ekurhuleni Municipality which is meant to provide the youth with access to information.

Acting CEO of NYDA Khathu Ramukumba says the campaign is rolled out in the whole country and is targeted at 18- and 19-year-olds.

“The campaign is designed as a response, and to attract this age group because they had the lowest voter turn-out in the 2009 general elections,” explains Khathu.

Khathu also added, “The project is structured as a National Youth Service (NYS) which is a Presidential programme that includes initiatives that address youth under-development.”

Twelve youngsters from KwaThema, who currently work as volunteers in the project which runs from February until the end of April, will do door to door visits in an effort to win the youth over.
