Early commemoration for Chris Hani

Remembering Hani

Commemorations for former South African Communist Party (SACP) secretary-general, Chris Hani, kicked off with a march to the Kgosi Mampuru correctional facility in Pretoria on Saturday.

The SACP Kwatsaduza sub-district secretary, Mzwandile Majola says the march is part of the events planned for the 21st anniversary of Hani’s killing and to hand over a memorandum of demands, opposing parole for the men convicted of killing Hani.

Hani was shot and killed in his driveway in 1993 and Clive Derby-Lewis and Janusz Walus, who were convicted of the killing, are currently serving jail sentences.

The pair have made numerous unsuccessful applications to be granted parole.

They have been attacked in prison, most recently Derby-Lewis was stabbed with a spoon by a fellow prisoner.

“Both his family and SACP want Hani’s killers to serve their full sentences and we demand that there be sufficient consultation before any decision is taken on their parole applications, because we don’t believe the killers have told the full truth about who ordered the killing of Hani,” Mzwandile added.
