Local taxi fare remains R6

Commuters using the local 4+1 taxis (Izigcebhe), which operate between KwaThema, Mzumbe and Selcourt are confused about the cost of catching one of these taxis.

However, the Springs Taxi Association (STA) explains that the transport fare for the 4+1 taxis has not increased.

Lebo Tsotetsi, one of the confused commuters says when using a local taxi she paid two different fees on a same day.

She says last Wednesday she paid the usual amount of R6 in the morning while in the afternoon when going home the driver forced he to pay R7.

Speaking on behalf of the taxi association, chairman Velly Mbatha says the local taxi drivers that force their passengers to pay R7 are robbing people of their money.

“The local taxi transport fare has not increased and passengers must not pay R7 but pay R6 when using a local taxi,”says Mbatha.

He also advised the appsengers to take the registration number of the local taxi whose driver forced then to pay R7 and report the matter to the STA offices.

Mbatha says it also came to his office’s attention that some of the local taxis have transport fare increase notices which, he says, are not form his office.

“To avoid being robbed of the money that you worked hard for by corrupt drivers, ensure that the notice plugged on these taxis has the taxi association logo, letterhead and the names of the association’s executive members at the bottom,” advised Mbatha.

He concluded by confirming that the transport fare for the local taxis is still R6 and that the commuters will be notified by the STA should the fare increase.
