Springs police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora says, according to the information given by two witnesses, they were sitting next to a fire at the back of Grootvlei mine when a group of suspects approached them.
He says the suspects opened fire, shooting at them. They shot one of the men in his back as he was trying to escape from the gunshots.
Ramphora adds that the deceased’s body was found next to a tree with visible gunshot wounds. “We suspect that the murder might be related to illegal mining,” says Ramphora.
No-one has been arrested and the police appeals to the community to assist them with any information that may lead to the murderers’ arrest.
