240l refuse service to KwaThema

The health hazards presented by illegal dumping in KwaThema will soon be a thing of the past as the Ekurhuleni municipality continues to streamline waste management services.

According to metro spokesman Lebogang Ramashala, “At the beginning of March, the metro introduced a fixed refuse removal calendar and now residents of KwaThema will be receiving 240l refuse bins.”

The distribution of the bigger refuse storage bins begins in the area next week, starting on Monday and approximately 24 957 bins will be given to households over a period of five weeks.

One bin will be delivered to each household (including townhouses and flats) and recipients will be required to sign acknowledgment of receipt.

Residents will be required to present either their most recent municipal account or their South African identity document in order to take receipt of the 240l container.

These bins will replace the refuse bag system, which means that the metro will be utilising specialised trucks for the scheduled weekly pick-up of refuse.

A pamphlet with the dos and don’ts and how to care for the bin will also be distributed with each bin.

It is crucial that residents make use of the bins, and not refuse bags, because the trucks that will be used for collection have been fitted with a mechanism that picks up the bin itself, and then loads the refuse into the compactor.

A 240l refuse bin is classified as service point and a promulgated tariff for such a bin amounts to R109.42, excluding vat, per month.

Residents who are in need of more than one bin may apply for such a bin, at an additional charge.

Distribution will take place Mondays to Fridays during business hours.

Centralised areas will also be used for the distribution of these bins on Saturdays and Sundays for those residents who cannot receive their bins during the week.
