Developing art talent

Young people in KwaThema keep themselves busy with art while also developing their art skills.

About 20 young people between the age of 12 and 35 years attend free art classes at the KwaThema School of Art. The school was established in 2006 with the aim to develop young artists and to help them hone their fine art skills.

According to the teacher, Pat Sithole after the students have completed their drawings and paintings they get a chance to exhibit their work at the students’ art  gallery exhibitions once a year.

He says the school has already produced some of the independent fine artists and tertiary students who pursue their dreams in fine art.

Speaking about what he loves about art one of the students Freddie Monare says fine art gives him the chance to communicate through his work.

“My pencil and drawing book are the things that help me show my feelings and allow me to pass the message the way I want to,”says an excited Freddie.

He says his dream is to become one of the professional artist and exhibit his work internationally. Freddie believes that his work will one day bring him money so that he can feed his family.

“Focus and dedication are the ingredients that take one to success,” says Freddie.

He concludes by encouraging the youth to take a stand and use their hands to fight for their better tomorrow.

The art classes take place at KwaThema Library on Mondays and Tuesdays from 2pm until 4.30pm.
