New school, new name

Michael Mkhwanazi Primary School in Tsakane, previously known as Tsakane Extension Eight Primary School, was officially opened on Friday.

The official opening of the school was conducted by Gauteng MEC for community safety, Faith Mazibuko.

The school operated as Tsakane Extension Eight Primary School for almost two years and Friday was the day when the school officially got its new name.

According to principal Thami Mkhondwane, when the school started its operations, it had only 860 registered learners but today about 1 067 learners are registered at his school.

He said the increased number of learners registering in his school means a growth of educated people in the area. Adding that the support that they get from the community clearly shows the excitement that the community has about having a school in their area.

He said one of the things that makes the community proud about the new school is the fact that the school is named after one of the patriots who fought for the people of Tsakane Extension Eight to be able to turn a place that was previously used for farming into a place where they can build their homes.

Speaking to hundreds of parents and learners at the event, MEC Mazibuko said she hopes that the school and her department will have an everlasting relationship to ensure the safety and better education of the learners.

She also promised to install intercom devices in all classrooms and ensure that there is shade at the school’s assembly area.

“Joining hands in creating a brighter future of our children means fighting together for a better and educated society,” concluded Mazibuko.
