Taxi operators meet to resolve matters

The Springs Taxi Association (STA) and owners of 4+1 local taxis (Izigcebhe) met on Tuesday in Springs.

According to STA’s public relations officer Kabini Thomas, the aim of the meeting was to stop divisions within the taxi industry and reach common ground.

Top of the agenda was the issue of stickers in the 4+1 taxis, which has caused a rift between 4+1 operators and STA in recent weeks.

Kabini said STA has agreed to lower the fee of applying for a sticker from R1 000 which includes penalties for late application, to its original amount of R500.

“Everyone in the meeting agreed that only taxis with stickers will be allowed to operate.”

Kabini urges members of the public to only board taxis with stickers, because the sticker system was created to curb crime in the local taxi industry.

STA appeals to 4+1 drivers not to pay money without getting a receipt, as only one chairman was appointed to collect money.

Kabini says the law has advised them that “removing of stickers forcefully is malicious damage to property which warrants a criminal case”.
