Sports department donates new sporting kits

"It is not only the responsibility of the government to activate sports activities in the community but for all of us".

KwaThema – Learners at Qedusizi Primary School were encouraged to participate in sports during the ministerial sports awards outreach program last Friday.

The initiative was held as a build up to the South African Sport Awards which were held over the weekend.

The deputy minister of sports, Gert Oosthuizen, handed over soccer and netball sporting equipment to the school.

Equipment was also handed over to five other schools and three community clubs in Ekurhuleni.

The school requested the department of sports to assist them to aquire the piece of land next to the school grounds for sporting grounds.

Member of the SGB, Busisiwe Mthethwa, says the school has most of the sporting codes but they don’t have grounds to play on.

“The learners are crammed into the school grounds. The only nearby grounds are in Bulithando which is very far and not safe for the learners to travel to daily.

“We have previously applied for the underutilised land outside the school but had no success.

‘We are pleading with the department to intervene and help us to acquire it,” she says.

Soccer legend and coach Innocent Mayoyo called on soccer legends in the area to help groom young players.

“It is not only the responsibility of the government to activate sports activities in the community but all of ours.

“Let us go to the grounds and share our skills and techniques with the teams.

“This will also help us fight drug addiction amongst young people in our communities.”

“Kwatsaduza used to produce quality players and I believe we still have such players who need our support so they can be among the best and represent the country,” he says.

MMC of community safety Clr Dorah Mlambo says the land in question belongs to a church but they will try to negotiate with the church and identify another piece of land to accommodate the church.

“We previously tried to persuade them but failed,” she says.

Mlambo says we need to work together as a community to revive sporting days like we did in the past.

“A healthy and active mind produces positive results,” she says.
