Disabled Club athletes qualify for national championship

KwaThema Disabled Sports Club athletes were unstoppable at the Nedbank Championships trials in Germiston last Saturday.

KwaThema – KwaThema Disabled Sports Club athletes were unstoppable at the Nedbank Championships trials in Germiston last Saturday.

Coach Aubrey Mathibela says 10 out of the 11 participants qualified for their different sporting codes.

“I am really proud of them and I expect nothing but the best from them all the time.”

The championship will take place in Bloemfontein later this year.

Mbali Dlamini (12) qualified for the long jump, 100m and 200m sprints.

“It is overwhelming but I was confident that I would make it through.”

Mbali, who joined the club in 2015, has already competed in a few national championships.

“I am also getting used to the intense training we go through in preparation for competitions,” she adds.

The grade seven learner says that her ultimate goal is to start breaking national records in all the sporting codes she participates in.

Mbali will also be taking part in the OR Tambo Games on Saturday.

The club has been nominated for Team of the Year with disability in the Gauteng Sports Awards.

Coach Mathibela still urges parents to allow their children to participate in sport in spite of any physical disability.

“I want them to see, through these athletes, that it is possible.”
