Adopt-a-Cop Sport Against Crime tournament

“Young people are forced to traffic and sell drugs on the school premises by the drug lords but if they have a good relationship with the police we believe they will confide in them.” - Police

KwaThema – The KwaThema Sector One police will be hosting an Adopt-a-Cop Sport Against Crime tournament where police officers will play against local primary schools.

This year’s theme will be “Sport, Their Weapon”.

Tournament organiser Captain Thabo Sibuyi says the objective of the tournament is for a cop to ‘adopt’ a learner who they mentor and keep on the right path.

“The initiative will help create awareness about crime and develop a relationship between the cops and the learners.

“We want them to be comfortable and trust the police by reporting any illegal activities within the school premises and community without any fear.

“We understand that young people are afraid of reporting a crime to the police because they fear victimisation, but through this initiative, we will be able to remove that stereotype.

“Young people are forced to traffic and sell drugs on the school premises by the drug lords but if they have a good relationship with the police we believe they will confide in them.

“Through the years while conducting police searches, we have found drugs and other illegal substances on school premises.

“Since the inception of the tournament, we have seen an improvement in the criminal activities in our schools.

“We are also encouraging a healthy lifestyle,” he says.
