Concerned youth help fight poverty in KwaThema

Member of the Lifestyle Foundation donated school shoes to Zamani Primary School and Job Maseko Primary School in KwaThema last Friday.

KwaThema – Job Maseko Primary School received 120 pairs of shoes, Zamani Primary School received 150 pairs of shoes, and Zithembeni Primary School received 37 pairs of shoes.

The group of young people decided to start the initiative to lend a helping hand those in need.

The chairperson of the group, Wandile Tshabalala, says in December they participated in the Ekurhuleni Goodwill Games.

“We agreed as a team that we were going to use 50 per cent of the winnings to buy school shoes for learners from disadvantaged backgrounds,” Tshabalala says.

“Unfortunately we were knocked out of the games during the knock-out stages.

“We decided that we will continue with our objective and collected school shoes from friends and community members.

“Each member of the foundation was expected to donate a minimum of two pairs.

“We also started a car wash drive to generate funds.”

Tshabalala says through the campaign they were able to collect 500 pairs of shoes.

“We will donate the shoes to seven other primary schools in the area.”

He says their next campaign will be collecting school jerseys and donating food parcels to disadvantaged families.

“We are calling those who are interested in donating to make the initiative possible to come forward.

“This is the community that we grew up in, and we are trying to give back as much as we can and help fight school drop-outs and drug abuse.”
