Reckless driving leaves residents dead and injured on the roads

On Sunday morning a white Mercedes Benz sedan collided with a Mercedes-Benz truck killing the driver of the sedan instantly at Tonk Meter Road and Mojela Street.

It is alleged the sedan was travelling in a northern direction, facing the oncoming traffic.

EMPD spokesperson Clifford Shongwe says the driver of the truck alleged he tried to avoid the collision but the sedan was driving at a high speed.

“This led to both vehicles colliding and killing the driver of the sedan instantly.

“Tonkmetre road was closed until midday while the accident expert was busy with the assessment of the cause of the accident.

“A case of culpable homicide was opened at KwaThema Police Station,” says Shongwe.

Meanwhile, on the same morning, a single vehicle overturned on the R23 slipway into R554 going into a west direction near Carnival City, seriously injuring 19 people.

“Amongst those injured were four children aged between six and 10 years old.

“Also, a 73 years old female was trapped in the vehicle.

“It took two hours to cut open the vehicle and rescue the woman.

“All the injured people were taken by various ambulances to Sunshine hospital, Actonville.

“The driver was arrested for reckless and negligent driving.

“The overturned vehicle is a white Mercedes-Benz Ivego. According to the driver, he was rushing to a wedding ceremony at Vosloorus,” says Shongwe.
