KwaThema disabled athletes shine brighter

KwaThema – KwaThema Disability Sports Academy is flying the Ekurhuleni flag high.

Coach Aubrey Mathibela says the team participated in the Central Gauteng for the Physically Disabled sports trials held at the Germiston Stadium recently.

“Lefa Gova (30), who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy, was selected to be part of the National Disability Soccer Team, which will be participating in the African Cup of Nations next year.

“He was also selected to be part of the Gauteng Disabled Soccer Team.

“He will be leaving for camp in December to prepare for the African Cup championships.

“Neo Ndlovu (21) participated in the 100-metre, 200-metre and 400-metre runs, where he obtained position one.

“He will be participating in the National Nedbank Championships, which will be held in March next year in Bloemfontein.

“Scelo Mnguni was also selected to participate in the African Cup championships, while Josephine Mthembu will be part of the national female squad in the tournament,” he says.

“Another athlete, Mevuyo Tabata (14), who was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth, participated in the 100-metre and 200-metre runs and long jump and was crowned champion.”

Aubrey says he is proud of the players for showing dedication during the trials and training.

“They have been working hard throughout the year and now it has paid off.

“We also appreciate the help of the community and parents who support the team.

“We would not have made it without them.

“We are calling on people with disabilities who are interested in joining the team to come forward.
