Former netball players called to join Legend team

“We are also grooming the younger girls to rebuild the sport in the area."

KwaThema – Former netball players in the area have regrouped to form the Far East Legend Netball Team.

The team came together in August to encourage and motivate young girls to participate in the sport.

Musa Mahlangu says they were concerned about a lot of young girls who didn’t have anything to do in their free time.

“Many of these girls end up being teenage parents, abusing drugs or being targeted by criminals.

“We are also grooming the younger girls to rebuild the sport in the area.

“Sports teach one discipline and respect and we are hoping that we will be able to get them to participate and even make it to national teams,” she says.

Musa says they are also trying to encourage a healthy life style in the community because some of the people in their age group are unfit and cannot afford gym memberships.

“Through the weekly exercises we will be able to beat some of the illnesses.

“We have coaches who have designed a training schedule to help regain our fitness,” she says.

The team participates in the Ekurhuleni Legends League games and will be playing in Soweto on Saturday.

“We will be playing at Elka Stadium with the Vaal Legends netball team and the Catorious netball team.

“We are encouraging interested players who are over 35 to come forward and join the team.

“We practise at Bulithando Park on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6-7pm,” she says.
