R100-million in bursaries for grade 12

"We don’t want to see or hear them complaining at the beginning of next year about not having a bursary or funds to study."

KwaThema – Chief whip of the ANC, Clr Jongizizwe Dlabathi, wished nearly 800 000 candidates in Ekurhuleni who are sitting their Grade 12 exams good luck.

Earlier this year Clr Dlabathi adopted Tlakula High and 90 matric learners across Ekurhuleni to help them improve their results in mathematics, science and accounting.

“The school performed poorly in last year’s matric exams, dropping from a 72.44 per cent to a 58 per cent pass rate in 2016.

“This was part of his commitment to ensure this year’s matric results improve,” he says.

Dlabathi says he is confident the intervention and hard work by his office to assist these learners, will yield positive results.

“They received tutoring classes, motivational seminars and other initiatives to help them prepare for this moment,” he says.

Dlabathi says the City of Ekurhuleni has increased the funds allocated to bursaries from R20-million to R100-m budget.

“Already, more than 800 learners were assisted to further their studies at various institutions of higher learning this year.

“We are hoping that these learners have applied and will use this initiative to plan for their future.

“We don’t want to see or hear them complaining at the beginning of next year about not having a bursary or funds to study.

“The ball is now in their court to pass with good grades which will help them to enrol in some of the best institutions in the country,” he says.
