Musicians find meaning in Maskandi

Ithole lika Mtshali is making Maskandi relevant to young people ekasi.

KwaThema – Snethemba Mtshali came to eGoli in search of a dream, and he may have found it in Maskandi.

The 33-year-old founder of the group Ithole lika Mtshali (Mtshali’s offspring) says his love for music keeps him alive.

“I have always wanted to form a group.

“I was happy to find like-minded people here.”

Snethemba has been living at KwaThema Hostel since 2006.

The group of eight has released two studio albums in the last three years.

“We are really encouraged by the support we get, especially here ehostela.

“People seem to really love what we do.”

Twenty-three-year-old Msawenkosi Madondo says being part of the group has given him a purpose in life.

“I saw Snethemba perform a few times and I found a way to get close to him.

“I love being part of the group because our music always has a positive and uplifting message.”

He says his dream is for the group to perform on big stages around the country.

“Maskandi is an expression of our love for our Zulu culture.

“The way we dance and the language we sing in show that we are proud of who we are.”

The group also performs at private celebrations, such as weddings.
