‘Embrace your culture’

“People have lost pride in their culture and adopted others leading to the delusion of other traditional practices."

KwaThema – Chief Eliajah Skhosana from Amandebele ethnic group has urged parents to teach their children about their culture and heritage.

Skhosana was speaking at a meeting with leaders from different ethnic groups gathered to identify some of the challenges facing society.

Eliaja says some of the social ills we are facing as a society are a result of young people not knowing their heritage or who they are.

“The migration of people from rural to urban areas is one of the reasons we have these challenges.

“Some were embarrassed to follow their traditions and hold their identity in high esteem and then ended up adopting those of foreign nationals,” he says.

Skhosana says the problem is now growing because we have young women who are parents but don’t know anything about their heritage.

“They then raise children who don’t know where they come from either.

“They end up being frustrated and trying to fit in with foreign cultures.

“People have lost pride in their culture and have adopted others. This leads to the inclusion of other traditional practices.

“By working together with chiefs and the government, we will be able to restore the dignity and pride in our heritage,” he says.
