Smangele fights to win

“I am still surprised and happy that I won the fight."

KwaThema – Boxer Smangele Radebe (22) is the champion of the International Bantamweight Championship held in Polokwane over the weekend.

She won by KO in round three against Nataline Bania from Uganda.

Smangele says Nataline was very strong, because she dominated the first two rounds.

“I doubted that I would win the fight but in the third round I was surprised when I threw a punch and she fell to the ground.

“She was strong, while I was underweight. I felt her punches but had to remain strong and continue fighting.

“I am still surprised and happy that I won the fight.

“It was a non-title fight but I have learned a lot from her, which I will adopt and train even more for other fights,” she says.

Smangele says she will be participating in the SA title fight next month in Boksburg.

“I am preparing and working hard to hold the flag high and represent Geo Maroon Boxing Club,” she says.

Coach Themba Zulu says he is very proud of Smangele because she only started fighting professionally last year.

“She is a hard worker and always determined to improve her craft.

“I am encouraging other females in the community to join the team.

“Through sports one learns to be disciplined and focus on the important things in life which will help pave their future.

“We train from 8am-8pm weekdays,” he says.
