Silindi keep kids busy after school with sports programme

Breeding excellence in Tsakane's children.

Tsakane – Matshidiso Silinde (44) is using sport to breed excellence in the 91 children she spends her days taking care of every day after school.

The mother of three started ‘We can do it! Community Project’ out of her own home to get her neighbours’ children off the streets.

“From Monday to Thursday, I help the kids with their homework.

And on Saturdays, we do life skills and sports.”

She has introduced sports to help their young minds and bodies stay active.

“The name of our team is Prosper Stars.”

And the girls do cheerleading and netball.

“I know that it would be unreasonable to expect them to study all the time.

Sport is something fun that we can still learn from.”

The children, together with their teacher also created soccer and netball fields at the open area behind the house.

The goal posts were donated by another organisation.

“We take part in as many tournaments as possible. And they have been doing very well.”

Silinde went on to explain that although she has so many children to look after she hopes that more children will come and join them

“Anyone who can assist us, please do so. We usually have sandwiches on Saturdays, because we have someone who donates bread.

But I wish we could have more for the kids.”

On Saturday Prosper Stars beat Happy Madrid 4-0, and Tsakane Young Stars 6-0.
