Commemorating Youth Day by wearing school uniforms

Learners were encouraged to be proud of their school uniforms.

KwaThema – Teachers at James Nkosi Primary School joined the national campaign for commemorating June 16 by wearing school uniforms.

The aim was to motivate the learners to wear their full uniform with pride daily.

Educator Thembi Chaphole says they felt it was important for the learners to be reminded of the sacrifices made by the youth of 1976 who made it possible for them to enjoy their right to education.

“It is better for us to teach them at a young age about the history of this country than to learn it from international movies which dilute the meaning behind the uprising.

“We were also trying to encourage the learners to stay in school to become better leaders in the future,” she says.

Thembi says they are calling on business people, government and other stakeholders to help by donating school uniforms to those in need.

“It is painful to see some of the learners from disadvantaged backgrounds wearing worn-out and torn uniforms.

“They find it hard to perform to their maximum abilities and often have self-esteem problems.

“People should also remember it takes a village to raise a child. Most of our learners are orphans and raised by their grandparents or in child-headed homes,” she says.
