Angry residents picket for tar road

Tsakane - Angry community members from Extension 8 picketed outside the CCC offices demanding ward 112 councillor, Annah Mnguni, ensures Nwendzamhala Road is tarred.

They say the area was developed 27 years ago but the road is still not tarred.

Community member Catherine Maqazolo (60) says they were the first people to move into the area and the main road is still not tarred.

“Many areas were developed years before us but they have proper roads.

“We are tired of being promised lies by different councilors; we deserve proper roads like other areas.

This is a main road for Extensions 8, 9 and 12 but it has been neglected for years.

“There are no stormwater drains and, as a result, the area becomes flooded and we end up being trapped in our homes,” she says.

Catherine says scholar transport drivers also refuse to drive into the area to collect the children because they fear being stuck in the mud.

“We have been submitting memorandums to the different ward councillors through the years but they don’t deliver,” she says.

Another community member, Samson Ratselela (70), says they have collected signatures from the residents in the area.

Responding to the complaints, Councillor Annah says the people in the area fail to attend community meetings.

“We have a monthly community meeting where the residents are updated about new developments in their area.

“We have been sending a grader in the area to scrub the road but they always chase it away saying that they don’t want a grader but a proper road.

“We are trying to prioritise and share development resources with other areas.

“We are currently building an Early Learning Center in the area.

“We will prioritise the road in the area when there is a budget for it. Now there isn’t, and we are prioritising other areas too,” she says.
