Soccer showcases their skills

KwaThema - Soccer players were awarded for their excellent skills on the field during the Mbosh Community Challenge Cup Under 17.

The tournament was aimed at creating awareness around substance abuse among players.

Event organiser Peter Moabelo (49) says they decided to host the tournament after identifying that many young players at this age start experimenting with drugs.

“We have a lot of young boys who are talented in sports, but are addicted to drugs and end up committing crime.

“We are worried they are destroying their future,” he says.

Peter says through the initiative they are trying to motivate the young players to be committed to sports.

Peter says the top players received vouchers.

“The best goalkeeper, striker, midfielder and defender of the tournament received vouchers.

“We are calling on interested business people in the area to come forward and support the initiative because we will be hosting it annually.

“We will only be able to win the battle of substance abuse among young boys if we join hands as the community.

“Such initiatives should be held regularly so they don’t find time to think about taking part in social ills,” he says.

Coach Mkhonza Mkhozana says teams in the finals also received soccer kit for making it that far.

“This is to encourage and motivate them to continue playing soccer.

“These boys need role models from the community and through the involvement of the residents they will know someone cares about their careers,” he says.
