Mystery fire burns gogo’s store room

KwaThema - A mystery fire almost burned Nana Nkosi’s home to the ground in the early hours of Monday.

It is alleged the fire started in one of the outside rooms, which was used as a storeroom for some of her old furniture.

The 61-year-old says she woke up to find her house covered with smoke and neighbours banging on her door.

“I immediately ran out of the house with my three-year-old grandchild, only to find out the fire started from outside.

“The fire was spreading into the kitchen in the main house but with the help of the community we were able to put it out,” she says.

Nana says she doesn’t know who or what started the fire because she doesn’t use the storeroom.

“We haven’t used the room in months because we use it to store old furniture.

“There was no one at home except me and my grandson and we were still sleeping.

“I now fear for my life because I don’t know what caused the fire.

“I wonder whether someone started the fire or an electrical fault,” she says.

Nana says she is happy no one was injured and the neighbours were able to help her put out the fire before it caused more damage.

“My chest is painful from inhaling the smoke but I am happy that our lives have been spared and we still have a roof over our heads,” she says.
