“He drove into my house!”

KwaThema - The Sambo family woke up to the horror of an alleged drunk driver crashing his car into their home in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Gogo Linah Sambo (91) says she struggled to fall asleep and was awake when the ordeal unfolded, just after 1am.

“I could hear the car coming from a distance.

“I actually saw the lights through my bedroom window,” she explains.

Celiwe Sambo, one of the six grandchildren who were in the house with their grandmother, says she thought the whole house would collapse after the impact.

“I heard a loud noise and immediately jumped out of bed.

“My grandmother kept shouting for me to take the younger children out of the house.”

Celiwe says this is when she realised the bedroom door was barricaded by furniture which was moved when the car crashed into the house.

“We were locked in and I was scared because the whole house was vibrating and gogo was still shouting.

“I thought the roof would collapse on us.”

With the help of neighbours, the family managed to get out of the house.

“The bricks continued to fall as we sat outside with our neighbours,” Celiwe says.

The family alleges it took police 20 minutes to get to the house, and they then arrested the driver of the car.

Ward councillor Zwelibanzi Ngwenya says: “We asked a few business people to help us mend the external wall for the family’s protection and to keep them warm, temporarily.”

Gogo Sambo says all she wants is to have her house fixed, the way it was, so her grandchildren can be safe again.
