As a crossroad between two main roads, the intersection sees quite a lot of traffic each day.
But its state is deteriorating and the problem seems to go far deeper than the surface.
“This portion of the road has been tarred so many times in the past few years,” says Samukelisiwe Gabela, who works at a business opposite the intersection.

She says that it was no more than six months ago that municipal workers were fixing the road.
“We have reported it many times. But I’m starting to believe that the problem is much deeper and they just fix it on the surface.”
Motorist Iphraim Morei, who works at a workshop a few metres away from the affected stretch of road, says that the situation has become dangerous because motorists have resorted to driving on the sidewalk to avoid the potholes.
“If we drive on the sidewalk, where must the children walk?” he asked.
Morei says, on a number of occasions, he has witnessed motorists arguing about who should go first because there isn’t enough road left for two cars to pass at the same time.
“This is bad for our cars too. Our tyres and shocks are getting worn out.”

Ward 79 Clr Thulani Simelane says that this problem has persisted for a long time.
“I have spoken to the Metro – they know about the issue,” he said.
“However, I do know that it won’t be easy to solve it. And it may take a while to get to the bottom of it.”
No comment was received from the Ekurhuleni Metro at the time of publishing.
