Residents plead for protection from community safety committee

Kwatsaduza - The Gauteng Portfolio Committee on Community Safety hosted a meeting at Faranani Multipurpose Centre, recently.

The purpose of the meeting was for the committee to receive and consider the Third Quarter Performance Report of the Gauteng Department of Community Safety for the 2016/17 financial year.

The chairperson of the portfolio, Sochayile Khanyile, says that committee also received presentations on the performance of the SAPS and other law enforcement agencies within the Ekurhuleni Region (SAPS, CPF and the EMPD).

“As part of ensuring that members of the public participate in activities of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature, the meeting is also open to members of the public.

“They were given an opportunity to raise relevant issues with the committee and representatives of the law enforcement agencies,” he says.

A concerned resident, Xolani Msimango, says they are pleading with the members of the safety committee to increase police visibility in the community.

“We are no longer safe in our homes because of criminals; we are hijacked and mugged in the streets.

“As the community, we are ready to help fight the criminals.

“We know some of the criminals but we fear that we will not be protected by the police if we speak out.

“The police must fight corruption within the force and focus on removing the criminals from the streets,” he adds.
