Mathematics24 encourages pure mathematics in school

Duduza - Several young people have come together to form Mathematics24.

The programme is aimed at improving the mathematics results of learners in the townships.

Managing director Koloti Moloi says they decided to open the centre after they saw the Annual National Assessment (ANA) results last year.

“Only 2% of the learners managed to obtain above 50% in mathematics.

“We realised that this has been a problem for years and there were no tutorial services in the township to help the learners.”

Koloti says they want to encourage young people to take pure maths in Grade 10 while also raising awareness about the importance of it.

“There is a stereotype that mathematics is difficult, which is discouraging young people from taking pure maths.

“Through the campaign we have come up with different ways of solving the equations, to make it easy for them to enjoy the subject.

“We are happy that since we started with the tutorials our students passed mathematics with good results,” he says.

Koloti says they are calling on residents to donate old or new mathematics study guides.

“Most of our students are from poor backgrounds and cannot afford to buy a study guide.

“They are often forced to share with their friends and this makes it difficult for them to practise when they are at home,” he says.
