Academy happy with performance

Kwatsaduza – Over the weekend 10 athletes from the KwaThema Disability Sports Academy went to participate in the Gauteng Trials for the Disabled.

The try-outs were held at the Germiston Stadium.

Chairman of the academy, Aubrey Mathibela, says he is happy with the way his team performed.

“If our athletes have done well, they qualify for nationals next year.

“We are just waiting for the results so that we can know their fate,” he says.

The athletes competed in javelin, shot-put, 100m and 200m and long jump.

Athletes representing the club were Princess Kerk (12), Mbali Dhlamini (11), Nthabiseng Phala (29), Jessica Tlou (24), Lufefe Simasi (27), Bongani Mgidi (16), Katleho Musiri (24), Mzwakhe Nkosi (28), Tshepo Bede (22), Isaac Mogala (28) and Njabulo Sengwayo (11).

“At this point we are just hoping for the best as it would be great having some of our athletes representing Gauteng in Port Elizabeth next year.

“If they qualify to go to the nationals they can also be able to get an opportunity to partake in the World Junior Games and the World Championships next year,” Mathibela says.

He adds that it has indeed been a great year for the team as they have further been nominated for the Gauteng Sports Awards as a team.

Zandile Nhlapho (32) of the team has also been nominated in the Woman with Disability category at the same awards after making it to the Paralympics.

“These achievements make us very proud as this year we have had one of our own making it to the Paralympics, have come home with many medals and have been nominated for an award.

“This shows that our hard work is finally paying off,” he says.
