Learners taught life skills out of the classroom

KwaThema – The Zimisele Secondary School hosted a talent show last Friday to put the fun back into teaching and learning.

The show was staged to ensure that learners use their talents to advance and boost their academic capabilities.

Principal Dempsey Noge says the school is dedicated to promoting both academic abilities and other talents.

“We held this event for learners to help them showcase their talents in various activities ranging from reading, poetry and technology to music, among other things.

“The idea was to ensure that learners’ talents are exposed and they have fun during teaching and learning” says Noge.

The learners enjoyed the day’s activities.

“We have had fun and the talent show is important as it provides a platform for us to unleash our potential, showing our talent,” says Grade 11 learner Wilfred Xaba.

Grade 10 learner Mary Nkozi shared the same sentiments, saying, “Through such talent shows, it makes it easy for us to display our abilities and it acts as a platform for peer education, which we enjoy.”

As part of the programme the learners also received life skills and motivation from a variety of speakers from other organisations.

Soul City representatives reminded learners that they do have a bright future; however, the need to take advantage of every opportunity presented in order to make it.

“You are the future; therefore you should not take your freedom and opportunities presented to you for granted. Work hard, pursue your dreams and goals relentlessly and in achieving these you will enjoy your whole life,” said Matebogo Nkosi of Soul City-Rise Young Women Club.

Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) emphasised abstinence, but for those who are sexually active they encouraged safe sex, testing and access to treatment.

“Abstinence is the way to go; however for those who are sexually active, given the high infection rate amongst the youth between 15 and 35 years of age, we encourage that you practice safe sex, test to know your status and get free treatment,” said Sbongile Khumalo from TAC.

LoveLife told learners that motivation and counselling services are accessible as part of their peer education services.

“Be motivated, work hard, pursue your dreams and do not depend on others to make them come true. More importantly respect your bodies,” said Nonkoluleko Mtsweni and Thapelo Hlahatse, LoveLife Peer Educators.
