Maseko releases mix tape

Tsakane – Local DJ and producer Thabo Maseko (34) is on a mission to share his art with the world.

Growing up with a love of music, the lad was unsure what the future had in store for him but when he got to Grade 10 in 1998, due to some family problems, he dropped out of school.

“About two years later my friends and I formed a group called Chronic which included a combination of Kwaito and hip hop.

“From there together we took a gamble and headed off to Yeoville, where we met lots of artists, however things did not turn out as planned so they group split up,” he says.

Six years later Maseko headed to the Campus of Performing Arts where he did a short course in sound engineering and in 2006 he proceeded to Soul Candy where he studied DJing.

Inspired by local DJ Oskido, who wears many caps working as a singer, DJ, producer and businessman, Maseko shares that this inspired him ti open his own studio called Music Entertainment Department Records, when he returned home in 2008.

“I started signing artists, recording for them and teaching them what I know, but due to financial constraints some of them left, so I started pushing my own material,” he says.

Some of the highlights in his career thus far include Maseko’s release of an album in 2010 called Kasi Most Wanted Volume One, which incorporated Kwaito and hip hop.

Now he is also promoting his mix tape which has 12 tracks featuring local artists.

He says he will be promoting on the road soon at various launches.

“My biggest accomplishment though, apart from my music, is that I’m in the process of completing my matric at the Ekurhuleni East College and afterwards I plan to further my studies in marketing so I can run a successful business backed up by my education,” he shares.
