Tele centres for students

Duduza - A telecommunication centre for University of South Africa (Unisa) students is up and running in Duduza.

On Tuesday, Unisa training facilitators visited the centre in Linda Street, to train and create awareness about these kinds of centres, which are open to all Unisa students across the country.

Regional academic co-ordinator Musima Tefo explains that students are encouraged to make use of the Unisa Telecentre, which aims to bring all the services they offer in a centre close to them.

“Students don’t need to visit Unisa branches, spend money at internet cafes or travel far to submit their assignments or get study material; they can do all these things at a telecentre,” she says.

Currently there are six telecentres in Ekurhuleni and students may access any of these, as long they can produce their student cards.

Students are granted six hours every week at a telecentre, to access the internet.

Internet cafés are welcome to collaborate with Unisa to offer support to their students in the community.

“With this training we also want to offer computer literacy to our students who don’t have the knowledge and background to use a computer and internet.

“You still get students who post their assignments or come all the way to branches just to submit them.

“Unisa is a Open Distance Learning (ODL) institute and communication is imperative, hence we are opening as many communication channels as possible, so our students get a better and efficient service,” adds Tefo.

Student Tariro Chidakwa says she didn’t previously know such centres existed, and now she will visit the centre so that she can make use of the services.
