Gardening to curb poverty
Tsakane – Reel Gardening in partnership with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has sponsored a number of community members with seeds and material to start their very own gardens.
Reel Gardening has been specifically designed to enable impoverished communities lacking in water and education.
Reel Gardening therefore has a strong focus on both school and community garden solutions.
One of the beneficiaries of this project is Nosipho Msiza (28) who has her own garden inside Tsakane Primary School.
On Monday she had to account for and report on how she has utilised all the materials given to her by the organisations.
She has a fully fledged garden which she has turned into a small-scale business that sells vegetables in the community and also helps feed learners through the school feeding scheme.
“I’m proud of my achievements and the fact that my sponsors are able to see what it is I have done to empower myself and my community,” says Msiza.
She also underwent workshops and training made possible by Reel Gardening so she may take care of her garden and also teach others in the long run.
“I have been honoured to have had an opportunity to educate myself about gardening and that is a skill that I want to teach others so we can be a community that fights poverty by doing things for ourselves,” she adds.
