Water ruins elderly woman’s home

KwaThema – Sleeping in a damp bedroom is the norm for Philippine Nkosi (76), from Phomolo Section.

Nkosi explains that her bedroom and yard are forever damp because of water seeping through her concrete floor and walls, resulting in her floor and bedroom wall cracking.

She explains that this has been happening for years now and she has sought the help of the municipality and ward councillor.

“I’ve reported the issue several times and, early last year, people came to evaluate my house to see what the problem is.

“Since then, no one has come or given me any feedback,” says the senior citizen.

Her daughter, Pam Mashifane, adds that she fears that one day the walls in her mother’s bedroom will collapse while she is asleep.

“Even the furniture in her bedroom is slowly deteriorating, so we try to move the furniture around, so that it doesn’t get spoilt by the water,” she says.

The family say they are unable to install new flooring in the house, because they fear that it will be damaged by the seeping water.

“All I want is for the metro to come and fix this problem, because it is really making my life a misery in my own home,” adds Nkosi.

At the time of publishing, the African Reporter was attempting to contact ward councillor George Vilakazi, to no avail.
