Former teacher dies

Tsakane – Maureen Sizakele Pelo née Makhanya died last Wednesday, after being in and out of hospital for some time battling a long illness.

Born on May 24, 1952 at Brakpan old location, she started her schooling at the Thabang Primary School and proceeded to Mamellon Nqabeni Secondary.

She went on to further her studies at the Madadeni College of Education, Daveyton College of Education, RAU and Vista, obtaining various qualification in the field of education.

Pelo then got married to the late John Pelo.

The 63-year-old taught at the Mkhathizwe Primary School in Thokoza and moved to Mandlethu Primary School where she held positions of deputy and acting principal.

To the community she was known as a teacher, mother of the community, counsellor, social worker, a true icon, coach and mentor to other teachers and a church elder, shares her family.

“As a mother of the community she fostered many needy children, paid for their school fees, bought them uniforms and provided food parcels to less fortunate families.

“She was also involved in the establishment of local drum majorettes and was a member of the Girl Guide Movement in the area.

“My sister was passionate about offering advice to troubled youth on marital issues and to the elderly who were troubled by their grandchildren, and will be remembered for her spiritual guidance at church and for being a devoted ANC activist,” says her brother, Percy Makhanya.

Pelo’s funeral service will be held at the Hour of Revival Church in Kgotso Street, Tsakane Extension One, at 9am on Saturday and the cortège will leave for the Brakpan Cemetery at 12.15pm.
