Duo charged with attempted murder and robbery

KwaThema – Two young men have been arrested for the attempted murder and robbery of a 60-year-old man.

This comes after the duo of 24 and 26 years attacked the old man, took his money and bag and then stabbed him on January 22.

Police say the incident occurred between White City and Deep Level at about 7pm, when the man was walking home from work.

“As the victim was approached by the two suspects, one took out a knife and demanded money and the bag the old man was carrying, and when the victim resisted the suspect stabbed him.

“The victim sustained a stab wound on the left side of his upper body and one to his stomach.

“The suspects then took off with the bag and the money, leaving the man on the ground bleeding and unconscious,” says KwaThema spokesman W/O David Mphali.

He says the 17-year-old grandson of the old man was luckily walking in the same direction as his grandfather when he saw the two carrying the old man’s bag.

As he walked on he saw his grandfather bleeding, rushed home to get help, and the family was able to rush to the scene, called for an ambulance and the man was taken to Pholosong Hospital for medical treatment.

“Investigator Sithembiso Mkhize managed to investigate the matter further as the grandson was a potential witness who was able to describe the two.

“Weeks later another complaint came in at the station about two men threatening and attempting to rob schoolchildren in the area.

“As police went to investigate they were able to find the same guys with a toy gun and two knives and on February 24 they were arrested for the attempted robbery,” says Mphali.

Upon realising that these two could be linked to the case of the old man, the investigator consulted with a witness in the first case who was able to positively identify the two.

On February 25 as the two were about to be released for the attempted robbery, they were re-arrested for the attempted murder and robbery of the 60-year-old man.

Last week Friday they appeared at the Springs Regional Court but the matter was postponed to March 4 and the duo remained in police custody at the Modder East Prison.
