United in the Clean Neighbourhood Friday’s campaign

KwaThema – The Clean Neighbourhood Friday campaign took place in various spots of Ekurhuleni last Friday, with the aim of tackling the problem of dirt.

The day started off with the Ekurhuleni Executive Mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele leading a delegation of the city’s senior officials, employees, key community stakeholders and residents in the eradication of dirt around the city.

At various gathering points, including Kwathema, Daveyton and Etwatwa, the task teams split up and headed off to their targeted cleaning spots.

Activities on the day included the cleaning of identified illegal dumping hot spots, litter picking, grass cutting, cleaning of identified streams and wetland areas as well as the distribution of educational material.

Cleaning equipment, including refuse bags, brooms, face masks and hand gloves were provided for the participants and the teams cleaned for the set three hours.

Head of Department of Environment Sydney Nkosi, who led the cleaning in KwaThema, says they had cleaned Thema Road, Kgaswane Street, Highland Area and some of the sports grounds.

“Things went well and the places we targeted are clean, so we are happy,” he says.

This initiative forms part of the mayor’s Clean Neighbourhood Friday campaign, which grew from the Clean City Campaign launched in October last year.
